Weekly Bulletin

~ 8th July 2022 ~

  • As part of our Parent Voice programme, we are keen for parents/carers to share their views on a range of aspects of school life.  Please complete the questionnaire attached.  There is still time for forms to be completed. The deadline is Friday 15th July 2022. Parent/Carer Online Survey
  • Please encourage students to bring their own water bottles to school, especially as the weather starts to get warmer.

In celebration of 20 years of Artsmark, Year 7 will be taking part in, “A Day to Create” which is a national celebration and opportunity for young people to be creative, imaginative and share ideas. Artsmark and Little Inventors are inviting students to think, draw and invent ideas. This took place in tutor groups on Wednesday afternoon and was such a great event.  Students were creating and sharing amazing inventions then drawing them out with an explanation of their concept.  We are sure a few of these inventions need a patent so pupils can get on Dragon's Den.

The English department have also been really active this week celebrating local accents.  Year 7 students were asked to listen out for words/phrases when listening to staff that may be from a different region and ask their teacher about them.  As Mr Mordue is from Northumberland he found this highly amusing as quite a few people find him difficult to understand.

Congratulations to 7.7 who won the Attendance cup for last week.  Next week - Friday 15 July, is our Achievement Assembly and we are all extremely excited for the biggest set of prizes yet.

Head of Year 7: Mr D Mordue     Assistant Head of Year 7:  Miss L Jordan

Well done Year 8, another 2007 positive points achieved this week. In History this week, students have reflected on their assessments and completed purple pen work to further develop their knowledge and understanding of key topics covered in the assessment. In Philosophy and Ethics students have also completed self and peer assessment tasks which have focused on recent assessments. Students are reaching the end of their learning cycle, in Philosophy and Ethics, where they have learnt about Christianity, its historical context and the influences on its growth to becoming the biggest world religion. Students have continued to visit our local primary schools this week to deliver languages lessons. Students have delivered lessons on food, body parts, sports and music. It has been fantastic to hear positive feedback from the primary schools and we have been really proud of how well students have represented the school, when delivering their lessons. Well done!

On Wednesday afternoon, students took part in a national celebration for Artsmark, “A Day to Create”. This provided the opportunity for young people to be creative, imaginative and share ideas. Students designed their own invention and spent time during the afternoon designing this and explaining why they had chosen this as their idea. The work produced on Wednesday afternoon was excellent! Well done! It has also been great to see students taking part in our Toot Hill Art Challenges. For this week’s challenge, students were asked to create a piece of street art, promoting a positive message in line with the school’s ethos. We had seen some fantastic entries into the challenge and well done to all students who took part in the challenge.

This week our Personal Development Curriculum has focused on a range of topics including, income and expenses and the nature of laws as part of our Topical Thursday discussions. On Wellbeing Wednesday, students also discussed why the NHS is important in keeping us healthy. Students enjoyed reading individually or as a tutor set on Friday morning. Well done to tutor set 8.10 who enjoyed a ‘tutor set breakfast’ on Friday morning as a reward for winning the tutor set attendance challenge. We will be continuing with our attendance challenge for the next two weeks and there will be another attendance breakfast during the last week of term.

Finally, well done to all of the Year 8 students who participated in the Athletics fixture on Thursday afternoon.

Well done Year 8, keep up the great work!

Year 8: Miss I Sheldon

We were absolutely thrilled to hear the excellent feedback for our Year 9 Sports Leaders on Wednesday 6 July 2022. Eleven of our Year 9s helped at the Bingham Primary School Families' Athletics event, supporting students and helping facilitate the event in various ways.

A special shout out goes to Ben P for his kindness to a younger student who had fallen over, encouraging her to complete the race.

All were a credit to the school and huge thank you to everyone in the PE department for supporting them.

Head of Year 9: Mrs L Munro     Assistant Head of Year 9: Miss C Thomas

Year 10 have had a busy week starting to prepare for their Interview Day next Wednesday 13 July and Work Experience, week commencing Monday 18 July 2022.

The students have taken a letter home which goes through what is involved and how you can support them. We look forward to seeing them and hearing their feedback from Wednesday.

Alongside this a group of our fantastic sports leaders took part in the Primary School Commonwealth Games, planning and delivering sessions. We were thoroughly impressed with the engagement and effort.

Next week we have our Geographers out on their field trip to Skegness alongside Interview Day and the mock art exam.

Head of Year 10: Miss L Hughes

Now that the Year 9 Bronze Qualifying Expeditions are complete, we turn our attention to the Year 10 Silver cohort who embark on their own Practice Expedition next week (Fri 15th July). The level of challenge increases at Silver level as pupils will be developing their map reading, navigation and camp craft skills in the White Peak area of the Derbyshire Dales.

The challenge increases further at Gold level, as participants explore the more dramatic terrain of the Dark Peak, Lake District or Snowdonia for a longer period of time. Gold DofE launches for Year 12 students at Toot Hill College in September.  We wish our Year 10 Silver cohort the best of luck with their exp!

Huge congratulations to all the students who are busy uploading their assessor's reports to eDofE - remember both paper or electronic assessor reports are fine, but please remember to make sure all sections are complete and that the dates are as per eDofE.

Lastly, the first Year 9 Bronze DofE Graduation takes place on Friday 15th July. This represents a significant achievement for the successful participants who have completed already - well done!  Please do not worry if you have not finished yet as a second graduation will take place in September. Please use the summer to finish your activities and upload your assessor reports. The second graduation will be before the Year 10 Silver DofE launch allowing all participants fair opportunity to finish Bronze before Silver starts.

In celebration of 20 years of Artsmark, we have taken part in, “A Day to Create” which is a national celebration and opportunity for young people to be creative, imaginative and share ideas. Students of Year 7-9 were in tutor groups during periods 6 and 7 on Wednesday 6th July. This was a great opportunity for our students to engage with Art & Design beyond the curriculum.  The afternoon was enjoyed by both staff and students.

In order to make the most of this creative opportunity, we encourage students to make their inventions at home and we would really appreciate your support during this process. To recognise success, we will be celebrating their achievements during achievement assemblies in the next few weeks. The final deadline for inventions to be submitted to their Head of Year is Friday 15th July 2022.
