Weekly Bulletin

~ 3rd March 2023 ~

  • Extended Study continues this week, please encourage your child to attend some sessions.
  • For this week only, the Careers Newsletters will be coming out on Monday separately. Apologies for the inconvenience.

Well done Year 7 for another fantastic week. This week as a year group we achieved 6234 positive points. Students are working incredibly hard in lessons, and we continue to receive very positive feedback from many class teachers.

This week we have enjoyed the scholastic book fair which runs until Tuesday 7th March. All students received a book token to put towards a book of their choice. It has been a joy to see so many students going to the library to have a look during their breaks and lunches and we are excited to find out how many of you decided to treat yourself from the fantastic selection. We also celebrated world book day on Thursday 2nd March, many members of staff dressed up as key literary characters and students took part in the whole school read as well as various fun activities around the school. It was a great day!

Every Friday we celebrate our Year 7 achievements during our FAB Friday Assembly. It really is a highlight of the week. Tutors, students and visitors enjoy hearing students cheering, clapping and congratulating each other for their hard work, sporting achievements, acknowledgments of kindness...to name a few. This week we wanted to use the bulletin as an additional opportunity to showcase the incredible attitude to learning of the students below. As mentioned before, we have more and more students achieving their bronze, silver and gold badges.

We are so proud and impressed with their focus, tenacity and approach to their studies!

Our Gold Award winners so far, who have achieved 800 points go to...! Well done!! I'm sure we will have many more names joining very soon too. Matilda H, Josh C, Max Q, Maisie-Jane C, Oscar S and Jarvis C.

Another excellent week!

Assistant Head of Year 7:  Miss H Barker

This week the Year 8s had an assembly from Dr Eardley to begin the week, recapping expectations and how to get it right around school.  By far the main event though was on Thursday with Years 7 to 10 celebrating World Book Day.  Miss Jordan dressed as a Dalmatian from the Disney classic and Mr Mordue came as a wizard from Slytherin in one of his favourite books, Harry Potter.

Year 8s could enter into numerous competitions including a whodunnit style mystery, the Masked Reader and Who's the Staff Reader?  A recommended reading list was shared and students in tutor time were sharing how many they had read.  Tutors also gave out book tokens so students can put them towards literature from lots of high street book shops.

Numerous Year 8s also entered a short story competition and we are pleased to announce the winners all receive a book from the learning lounge.  Winners were EJ, AP and DM.  All entrants receive credits and a shout out in the Fab Friday Assembly.

A huge to thank you to everyone for signing up to the Walesby residential, we will be in touch soon to let you know if you have been successful.

Head of Year 8: Mr D Mordue

Assistant Head of Year 8:  Miss L Jordan

Well done Year 9, another 2,322 positive points achieved this week. Students are continuing to work hard in lessons and it has been fantastic to see their classwork when visiting lessons this week. In Geography students are studying natural disasters. Students have been exploring why the largest earthquakes are not always the deadliest because of human actions. Students worked hard in lessons, analysing an extract from a book, ‘Disaster by Choice’. In Science, students have been completing practical activities to further develop their knowledge. Students have studied the structural differences between types of cells, which involved using the microscopes. Students have also completed a circuit practical in Physics where students worked well in small teams to complete the challenge.

On Monday morning, during tutor set, we focused on attendance. We have an ‘Attendance Challenge’ which is running this half term. Every student has been given a target attendance to achieve by the Easter Holidays. This target is based on current attendance and gives a focus for students to work towards. We will be rewarding all students who achieve their target during our Easter Achievement Assembly.

Well done to the Year 9 Girls Football team who have progressed into the next round of the County Cup. The girls played well on Monday evening in a very competitive game. A special mention to Daisy who made great saves and Bethan for scoring a fantastic goal!

Year 10 celebrated their achievements from last half term on Friday morning with Mrs Gray. We focused on a range of achievement involving those students that earned the most amount of PRIDE points between January and February half term and those that had the most Star Student nominations.

It was wonderful to hear all the positive comments subject teachers had to share about their students; cementing my firm belief that Year 10 are truly the best year group in school and have a fantastic reputation with staff. We also recognised those that have excellent attendance (97% and above) and those that display our PRIDE values on a daily basis.

We are continuing to focus on work experience on a Wednesday morning so please continue to support your child in applying for this. Big shout out to Mr Davies and 10.7 for being the first tutor set to have all CVs completed - well done!

This week three of our Year 10s, Gabby C, Evie F and Ruby W, completed their second day at St Peters Primary School, working on our collaborative art project. The students were fantastic, demonstrating dedication and showcasing their talents. The main focus was adding further detail into each section of the East Bridgford map.

Photos of the Week - Volunteering

Following a big focus on food in the last few weeks, I thought we'd take a look at some of the amazing volunteering activities that DofE participants are doing.  Here is Issac S supporting the work of volunteer staff at the Toothill ACF Detachment, Rainbow T helping younger children to learn how to play the piano, Emily G keeping her local area clean and tidy for the benefit of others and Sophie E supporting the work of her local Barnardo's charity shop.  Well done everyone!

A Summary of the Year 9 and 10 DofE Meeting by Niamh O (DofE Ambassador)

Hi everybody, On Friday 24th we had a meeting for all DofE bronze and silver participants, here is a quick summary of what we went through:

  1. Everyone is now in groups of 7 for their expedition! If you weren’t in the meeting, you will have been added to a group - but don’t worry, this is a perfect opportunity to make new, unexpected friendships! (you'll see other friends from other groups at the campsite anyway!!)

  2. Ground rules and expectations- You must always stick to our school rules and PRIDE ethos. As well as this, please stick to the Countryside Code (Protect, Respect, Enjoy) at all times. We don’t want anyone getting in trouble!! Additionally, anyone who brings along vapes, cigarettes, alcohol or any other illegal substances will be immediately sent home and will fail their DofE award.
  3. Training: You will learn how to navigate using a map and compass; how to set up and cook on a Trangia; how to put up a tent; basic first aid and lots more!! Also remember to wear non-school uniform that is suitable for the weather and bring a smaller daypack as well as plenty of fluids and snacks!  Have a great time!
  4. eDofE: please log your activities on the DofE app as soon as possible so you can graduate with your award in July!
