Year 7&8 Controlled Assessments

Year 7

As part of our provision for great learning and progress at Toot Hill School students in the art department undertake termly controlled assessments in Year 7 to allow them to recognise their development and see their progress.

These assessments are planned in to our schemes of learning and used to evaluate pupil’s progress on their practical skills in drawing using the formal elements as well as their knowledge of the review of artists work. Due to their practical nature the assessments take place in normal lesson time allowing pupils access to equipment where appropriate.

Time Details

  • September: A base line test to assess their observational skills.
  • January: In line with whole school assessment timetable. Assessment based around colour theory. Revision support sheet will be provided to students.
  • March: Written evaluation of a final piece which will assess pupils critical reflection and use of art terminology.
  • June: To assess pupils progress in their observational skills

Year 8

As part of our provision for great learning and progress at Toot Hill School students in the art department undertake termly controlled assessments in Year 8 to allow them to recognise their development and see their progress.

These assessments are planned in to our schemes of learning and test pupils on their practical skills in drawing using the formal elements as well as their knowledge of the review or comparison of artists work. Due to their practical nature the assessments take place in normal lesson time allowing pupils access to equipment where appropriate.

Time Details

  • September: A base line test to assess their observational skills.
  • October: Critical analysis and comparison of artists work.
  • February: Assess understanding and skill on facial framework and proportion
  • June: Perspective drawing

Marking Criteria

Please find the marking criteria that is used for each year throughout the department. All work is standardised within the department and across year groups.

Year 7

These assessments are planned in to our schemes of learning and test pupils on their practical skills in drawing using the formal elements as well as their knowledge of the review of artists work. Due to their practical nature the assessments take place in normal lesson time allowing pupils access to equipment where appropriate.

  • November: A half term assessment to review their observational skills and check their progress
  • January: In line with whole school assessment timetable. Assessment based around colour theory. Revision support sheet can be downloaded here.
  • February: A half term assessment to review their understanding of cultures studies and check their progress
  • May: In line with whole school assessment timetable. Revision support sheet can be downloaded here.

Year 8

As part of our provision for great learning and progress at Toot Hill School students in the art department undertake termly controlled assessments in Year 8 to allow them to recognise their development and see their progress.

These assessments are planned in to our schemes of learning and test pupils on their practical skills in drawing using the formal elements as well as their knowledge of the review or comparison of artists work. The assessment in June has been designed to reflect the practical nature of Art assessments at KS4 level and pupils will undertake work using a range of specialist equipment. Due to their practical nature the assessments take place in normal lesson time allowing pupils access to equipment where appropriate.

  • November: A half term assessment to review their portrait skills and check their progress
  • January: In line with whole school assessment timetable. Assessment based around artists previously studied. Revision support sheet can be downloaded here.
  • February: A half term assessment to review their understanding of previous artists studied and check their progress.
