STEM Bulletin - July 2020

While many of us have been disappointed that some of the Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths (STEM) activities that were planned have obviously had to be cancelled, there are still some fantastic chances to think about STEM pathways, and opportunities, as we head into the summer.

Year 10 – Arkwright Engineering Scholarships:

Every year we support talented STEM students in applying for financial scholarships to support them in becoming future graduate engineers. This year we are delighted to announce that our current year 11, Tommy Besson has been a successful applicant this year. He has made it to the final stage of the application process and will hopefully be receiving his financial award as well as being linked to an engineering company who will support and sponsor him through his Post 16 studies.

This year’s applications will launch properly to year 11 in the autumn term but I wanted any potential future engineers to have the opportunity to know what Arkwright Scholarships are about (link here!) and perhaps to think about undertaking a practical project at home over the holidays (link here!) which will greatly help with your Arkwright application and STEM skills.

Year 7 & 8 – Tech We Can

This is a fantastic resource to enable students to do STEM activities and to see what career opportunities are available in the technology sector. It is sometimes delivered in schools but over lockdown there have been some amazing video lessons uploaded (Tech Tuesdays) for students to complete independently at home.

Check it out if you’re interested in getting creative and improving your STEM skills & knowledge. (Registration is required but it is FREE!)

All Years - Big Bang Digital 2020 - Science, engineering & Covid-19

This online event has been put together following the cancellation of both out Big Bang Fair trips that normally go out in the spring and summer terms. Big Bang Digital takes place on Tuesday 14th July and celebrates the amazing work of scientists and engineers in a pandemic.

TV & Radio Science Presenter, Podcaster & YouTuber Greg Foot will be hosting live, exploring the topic with a range of guests, putting your questions to the experts and bringing his usual energy and enthusiasm to the day.

Be sure to click on digitalbigbang.co.uk on 14th July if you’re interested in watching some amazing STEM content.

If you have any questions about these initiatives (or anything else STEM related) then feel free to get in touch with Mr Walters on rwalters@toothillschool.co.uk
